Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. joins in the celebration of #Juneteenth to commemorate June 19, 1865, a date two and a half years after emancipation when our enslaved ancestors in Texas, the most remote “slave-holding” state, were finally informed they were free. As is our way, these African Americans made the best of the situation by turning a confirmation of this nation’s unfair treatment into a celebration of our God-given right to “the pursuit of happiness.” Emancipation Day has been celebrated in Texas ever since.
The holiday, born of duplicity and inhumane treatment, now unites a nation in celebration of Black culture and Black achievement. It is a celebration of the fact that Black Lives Matter!
